How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photoshoot

How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photoshoot

A maternity photoshoot is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the incredible journey of pregnancy and the anticipation of welcoming your little one. The photos you capture during this time will become cherished memories, and with the right preparation, you can make the most of your session. To learn more about my Maternity Photography services and book your session, visit the Maternity Photography page.

1. Choose the Right Time for Your Maternity Photoshoot

The ideal time for a maternity photoshoot is between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your baby bump is beautifully defined, and you’re still comfortable enough to pose. Scheduling your session during this time allows you to capture the excitement and beauty of pregnancy before your little one arrives.

2. Wear Something Comfortable and Flattering

Your outfit plays an important role in how you’ll feel during your maternity photoshoot. I provide a selection of beautiful maternity dresses in my client wardrobe, including flowing gowns that highlight your baby bump and make you feel elegant and confident. If you’d like to bring your own clothes, look for soft fabrics and solid colours that create a timeless look. Avoid busy patterns, as they can distract from the beauty of the moment.

If you’re wearing accessories or shoes, make sure they complement your outfit and enhance the photos’ overall elegance.

3. Keep Your Skin in Mind

While pregnancy often gives your skin a wonderful glow, it’s still a good idea to hydrate and moisturise in the days leading up to your maternity photoshoot. Avoid harsh skincare treatments that could cause irritation. If you’d like to wear makeup, it’s important to come to the shoot already prepared, as I do not offer makeup services. A natural makeup look that highlights your glowing skin works best.

4. Take Care of Your Nails

For a polished, complete look, don’t forget about your nails! Whether you prefer a classic manicure or a fresh coat of polish, well-groomed nails can make a big difference, especially for close-up shots. Choose a neutral or soft polish that complements your outfit, and make sure your nails are clean and polished.

5. Think About Your Hair & Makeup

How you style your hair and makeup plays a big part in feeling confident and beautiful during your maternity photoshoot. For your hair, whether you prefer a sleek updo or soft, flowing locks, it’s important that you feel comfortable and confident with your choice. I recommend coming to the shoot with your hair styled in a way that suits your personal style. If you’re aiming for a more polished look, you may want to consider professional hairstyling before your session. Please note that I do not offer hairstyling services, so it’s important to come fully prepared.

When it comes to makeup, I do not provide makeup services, so I recommend arriving with your makeup already done. A natural look that highlights your glowing skin works best for maternity photoshoots. Choose a makeup style that makes you feel radiant and comfortable. If you prefer a more subtle look, light foundation, a touch of blush, and natural eyeshadow will enhance your glow without feeling overdone.

6. Bring Loved Ones to Share the Moment

A maternity photoshoot is an opportunity to celebrate this beautiful journey, and it’s even more special when you share it with your loved ones. Whether you bring your partner, other children, or even a pet, their presence adds to the joy and connection in the photos. I encourage you to bring your family members to capture the full story of your growing family.

7. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

The key to a great maternity photoshoot is to relax and enjoy the process. I will guide you through every step, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident. Let go of any worries about posing—this session is about celebrating you and your beautiful baby bump. The more relaxed and joyful you feel, the more it will shine through in your portraits.
